Want Your Kids Safe AND Happy This Festive Season?
The festive season is a time of joy, travel, family gatherings, late nights and a break from routine. It’s a beautiful time for kids but it also brings a few extra risks that parents and caregivers should stay mindful of. Here are simple practical ways to keep your little ones safe while still letting them enjoy the holidays.
1. Stay Alert in Crowded Places
Malls, events and holiday resorts get busy quickly.
· Dress your child in bright, easy-to-spot colours.
· Take a quick photo of their outfit before going out (helpful if they wander off).
· Agree on a “meeting point” in case they get lost.
· Write your phone number on their arm if they are too young to remember it, or better yet, get a child tracker.
· Teach them to identify safe adults such as security guards, store and hotel staff.
2. Water Safety Is Non-Negotiable
Swimming pools, beaches and water parks are holiday favourites, but accidents happen fast.
· Never rely on older kids to supervise younger ones.
· Keep a close physical reach on non-swimmers.
· Ensure pools at family homes have locked gates or covers.
· Bright swimwear is safer — it’s easier to spot underwater than dark colours.
3. Be Mindful Around Family Gatherings
Children can feel overwhelmed around many unfamiliar adults.
· Encourage them to say “no” to hugs or interactions that make them uncomfortable.
· Check in with them throughout the gathering.
· Keep an eye out for overstimulation, fatigue or separation from caregivers.
· Holiday gatherings shouldn’t override a child’s boundaries.
4. Travel Smart and Stay Visible
Whether you’re travelling by car or plane:
· Use proper car seats and seat belts every single time.
· Keep emergency contacts and medical info in your child’s bag.
· Talk through what to do if they get separated in transit.
· For road trips, pack snacks, water and something comforting to keep them calm.
5. Keep an Eye on Holiday Treats
With all the sweets, snacks and treats around:
· Watch out for choking hazards (especially nuts, grapes, hard sweets).
· Limit sugary snacks if your child becomes hyper or nauseous easily.
· Bring alternatives for kids with allergies when visiting family.
6. Fireworks and Braai Safety
Festive nights often come with fireworks and braais.
· Stand far back from fireworks, they move unpredictably.
· Keep children away from hot coals and open flames.
· Ensure sparklers are handled only with supervision.
7. Online Safety Still Matters (Even on Holiday Mode)
With more screen time during school breaks:
· Activate parental controls.
· Disable in-app purchases.
· Teach children not to share photos or personal details online.
· Check the apps and games they use frequently.
· A relaxed holiday doesn't mean relaxed online boundaries.
8. Stay Consistent With Basic Safety Rules
Even when away from home:
· Don’t enter water without an adult.
· Don’t leave the house or yard without telling someone.
· Don’t accept food, gifts, or lifts from strangers.
· Always ask before going anywhere new.
· Consistency helps children make safer decisions even when they’re excited.
A Gentle Reminder for Parents
You don’t need to be perfect, just present. Children feel safest when they know a loving adult is near, paying attention and ready to step in. Keep things simple, stay alert and enjoy the little moments. Holidays are meant to be joyful, relaxing and full of memories your children will treasure long after the season ends.
